Russian Babushka Wooden Doll Set
A set of 5 wooden, hand turned babushka dolls ready for you to paint or decorate. Also called Russian Dolls, the dolls are all different sizes and the four larger ones open into two pieces to enable you to ‘hide’ the smaller doll inside. The individual doll sizes are 11.5 cm, 8 cm, 5.5 cm 3.7 cm and 2.5 cm.
It is reported that the first nesting doll set was made in 1890 in Russia. Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in the traditional Russian jumper dress. Although generally female, the figures can be either gender and usually the smallest doll is a painted to represent a baby in a shawl.
Sometimes known as matryoshka dolls (which translates as little matron) and sometimes known as “babushka dolls”, (which translates as “grandmother” or “elderly woman”), the dolls can also be painted to follow a theme. The decision is yours!
